Collegiate High-Risk Gambling Program: The legalization of online sports betting and increase in online gambling opportunities have increased access and availability of gambling activities among college students. With college students at an increased risk of experiencing gambling-related harm compared to the average population, the time is now for colleges and universities to build their readiness and capacity to address this issue.

The Higher Education Center developed a 40-minute educational program that can be delivered to students on this topic. Informed by the expert researchers and practitioners, this program centers a motivational enhancement approach to help students identify gambling-related harms and strategies to avoid them, as well how to identify if a friend is experiencing those harms and how to help them. This session will arm participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools to deliver this training on their campuses and better understand why gambling should be incorporated into an institution's continuum of care.

This session will be facilitated by Claudia Alonzo, APSU, and Tiffany Burks-Sanders, UofM. Both Claudia and Tiffany serve as Executive Committee members for CHASCo and have received training on CHASCo's behalf.

Claudia Alonzo serves as the Director of Community Care & Standards at Austin Peay State University, where she oversees student conduct, care coordination, and wellness and prevention initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs. She is an Executive Committee member for CHASCo and has completed HECAOD’s Collegiate High-Risk Gambling Program training, supporting statewide efforts to integrate gambling awareness and prevention into higher-education settings.

Tiffany Burks-Sanders, LMSW, serves as the Wellness and Engagement Counselor at the University of Memphis, where she provides prevention and outreach services, individual and group therapy, and integrated behavioral health support to the campus community. A two-time University of Memphis graduate and current Doctor of Social Work student, she brings over a decade of healthcare and health education experience and holds multiple certifications in diabetes prevention and self-management, chronic disease support, suicide intervention, mental health first aid, and men’s health education. Tiffany is an Executive Committee member for CHASCo and has completed HECAOD’s Collegiate High-Risk Gambling Program training. Her work centers on promoting student wellbeing through evidence-informed, trauma-responsive practices that help individuals strengthen resilience and thrive.
